RIFLE CLUBS AND VOLUNTEERS.
By Tolcgraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night,
On Wednesday last a deputation waited on the Premier to point out certain grievances of tho dofenco rifle clubs regarding tho programme for tho Rifle Association mooting. Tho Premier’s reply on tho points raised has been furuishod in writing. He points out that the complaint about tho amount of prize mouoy noU being fairly distributed between rifle clubs and volunteers iB misleading, for, based on numbers, the rifle clubs would only receive about £l5O, whereas £565 is now allotted for events which they may compete for. So far as the statement that many matches are not open to rifle clubs is concerned, tho Premier remarks that taking into consideration tho relative oumbers of volunteer corps and rifle clubs aud their value to the State, there is a very liberal proportion for tho latter, inasmuch as eight matches aro opon to rifle clubs and nine restricted to volunteers only. Mr Seddon says that he is advised it would be unwiso to alter present regulations in order to substitute an ago limit for the present five miles limit from volunteer corps for rifle clubs. Such a step would injure volunteering.
