THE STORM, By Telegraph—Press Association— CHRISTCHURCH, last night* The damage caused to the grain and root crops in the country districts by yesterday’s storm is greater than was anticipated. One farmer of Rakaia rtver estimates his loss at two tliousaiJ pounds. In Ellesmere, and Brooksidc district many hundreds of aeris of grain have been ruined.; Tho bailey suffered most, while hundreds of acres of potatoes and turnips have had the tops cut, clean off. Hundreds of acres of crops have been ruined-in Spiingsion district. Lincoln district suffered greatly. .So far as can be ascertained, no damage was done on Banks Peninsula. THE ILL-FATED TIMARU.
Tie enquiry into the circumstances attending the loss of the barque Timaru which left Lyttelton in ballast for Kaipara, on August 16th, 1902, ani has not arrived at her destine tioii. was heard to-day. After evidence had been heard the Court found that the Timaru had been totally lost on o' about August 24, 1902, through heavy weather or other perils of the sea and that she was well found and properly ballasted and manned.
