SEVERE HAILSTORM.

By Telegraph—Press Association.', Waimate, last night. An unusually heavy hail- and thunderstorm passed over a portion of this district yesterday forenoon. The hail was vdry large, and played havoc wherever the storm traversed, especially in gardens, t by stripping all kinds of plants and leaving nothing but the stems. The grain crops do not appear to be much injured, except in one case in the suburbs of the town* where a ten acre paddock of wheat w*ia completely mown down, and is not worth cutting. The storm was confined to' a narrow strip, and passed out to sea. Snow lay a couple of inches deep, and snowballing was indulged in. Snow in the shade lay until this morning.
