New Plymouth, last night. For the cricket match, Englishmen v. Eighteen of North Taranaki, the weather was very boisterous all the morning, with heavy showers. In the afternoon the weather was bright. The attendance was good. A start was made at 3.30. Bobertson, skipper of the home team, won the toss and eleoted to bat. The ground was in

__ capital order, but soft, and rather slippery. Perham and Gudgeon opened the batting. The attack was entrusted to Hargreaves and Thompson. Hargreaves dismissed Perham with his second ball. One for 1. Spencer succeeded, but his stay was short, Warner effecting a brilliant catch off Hargreaves. Two for 7. With advent of F. Bobertson matters livened up with boundary hits, but Gudgeon succumbed to an easy catch. Three for 16. Gardner followed, and opened with a boundary cut; after making six he was clean bowled by Hargreaves. Four for 28. Olegg arrived only to see Bobertson bowled by Hargreaves. Five for 30. The next wickets fell rapidly. Nine for 36. Whittle improved matters, and before retiring, splendidly caught by Hargreaves near the boundary, ho helped to raise the score to 50 for twelve wickets. Lightband and Carter then made a serviceable stand. The latter was the first to retire from a soft catch by Warner. Ho made top score, 21. The partnership added 33 runs, the score being thirteen for 83. Two runs later Lightband played Qn. The rest of the team gave no trouble. The innings lasted two hours, closing for 86.
