Tho bowling was good, and tho Holding excellent, Taylor boing especially smart behind the wicket. Coming at tho fall of the Taranaki toum, Thompson was unplayable, and tho wickets foil in quick succession. Tho visitors wont in at about four o’clock, and in tho two hours und a half at the'r disposul put on 184 runs. Taranaki, who fielded fifteen men, were fair in tbo field, and tho bowling couldmot bo taken liberties with.' Warner and Burnup oponed to tho bowling of McCarthy and Gudgeon. Thirteen wus on the board when Gudgeon olean bowled Burnup, who had made 12. Fane came next, and shortly after Warner gave a chance which was not accepted. Immediately after tbo captain fell a victim to a catch, tho scoring being 28, 2,8, Gudgeon having a record of two for seven. Taylor followed, und after Fane had made 12, tho latter was clean bowled by Me Cnrthy ; three for 46. Dowsoo played nice cricket for 19, and fclion fell to a fine ball from Colo. Taylor in the meanwhile had been batting well, and tho century was in sight. Bosanqaet came, bu’ only to seo Taylor leave for a fine 80. Johnson joined Bosanquet, who wus quickly caught after compiling 5. Thompson worn in. Johnson was careful, and play was slow for u tirno.
