ROWING.
GISBORNE ROWING CLUB. Much excitement prevailed last evening, when the linal for the above Club’s trial fours was rowed. Spectators crowded the staging of the sheds and a large number congregated on the Whataupoko bridge to get a good view of the contest. The competing crews were : L. Williams (stroke), G. Nolan (3), B. Tanner (2), H. Garrett (bow), E. Warren (cox). H. W. Symes (stroke), J. Martin (3), C. Sargisson (2), A. Coleman (bow), M. Doyle (cox). Erorn a rather bad start, Symes got well in the lead, and made the pace pretty lively. On approaching the lootbridge, his crew had a lead of a length and a-guarter. Williams, who was rowing very steadily, then rallied his men, and, making a brilliant spurt, succeeded in reducing the gap to half-a-length. Both crews were now pulling finely, and travelled in company for a short spell. However, Williams soon called for more weight, and his men, responding gamely, forged ahead, and won a good race by a length. Both crews are to be congratulated on the fine exhibition of rowing, and are to be commended on the consistent training they have put in during the past three weeks. Hearty cheers were given for Mr G. B. Oman, who was the donor ot pretty Maltese crosses, each being suitably inscribed. The handicap sculling competition, for a handsome silver cup presented by Mr C. Buseke, will be rowed about tbo middle of Jauuary.
