CHRISTCHURCH-BLENHEIM RAILWAY.

By Telegraph—Press Association, Christchurch, last night. The Minister of Public Works, accompanied by the Premier and Minister of Education, to-day opened the first section of the Christchurch-Blenheim railway, from Waipara to Scargill. The section consists of nearly fifteen miles, passing for the whole length through the Glen° mark Estate. An excursion train from Christchurch took up about 800, and there were over 1000 persons present. The Minister for Public Works promised that the next section, which will take the line on to Cheviot, will be opened in fifteen months. The Ministerial party were the i guests of Mr A. W. Rutherford at luncheon after the ceremony, and went to Wellington by the Rotowahaoa to-night.
