Tho General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand opened at St John’s Church this evening. Thcro were a hundred and soventy-seven delegates in attendance. Tlie Rev. John Giob, retiring Moderator, preached from the espistlo of St. Paul to the Colossians, chap, lit., v. 15. At the conclusion, he formally nominated tho Rev. J. Paterson aH Mode rator. The latter, in his address, expressed pleasure that not ono church or minister. in tho colony had held aloof from tho union, and the result had been a groat quickoning of Spiritual work in the church. Ho urged the desirablonoßs of extending tho sphere of the church into all new settlements, and also pointed out that tho stipends paid to many ministers wero inadequate, lie considered that tho plebiscites recently taken left no doubt as to tho feelings of tho people in regard to religious instruction in schools. Tho Assembly commences business in tho morning, and tho sittings ure likely to extend over 10 or 11 days.
