PACIFIC CABLE, Per Press A^sociatim. WELLINGTON, last night. .Sir Joseph Ward states that the Pacific cable will he open for traffic in a few weeks. The stalling of (lie different stations will contribute to a slight delay. The cable has lieen put down a mouth ahead of coiitrqcjL nine. The rates to Canada and the United States, plus terminal charges, will probably lie : Commercial messages, 2s per word ; Government, Is Id, and press, Sd. THE CUP RACE. Jtlelwood has gone amiss, and will not start for the New Zealand Cup. THE TREASURER. Sir Joseph Ward left for the South to-night.
PAINFUL EXPERIENCE
A FAMILY’S NARROW ESCAPE,

A native man, liis wife, aDd two children were badly burnt at ICerikori. They were sleeping in a tent, which caught fire through having live embers inside for warmth. A portion of the burning tent fell on the man’s arm and woke him up. He managed to drug his wife and children outside. The woman was badly burnt oil the body and one leg. The children’s faces were burnt very much. The mao's arms were burnt severely. All are likely to recover.
