WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL.
Nominations of candidates for tho Waiupu County Council for the next triennial period must bo in the hands of Mr W. O’Ryan, returning officer, at the County Council Offieo not later than 12 noon on Friday, Hist inst. THE WOOL SEASON.
Yesterday, tho Omapore brought 20 bales of the new season’s clip from Waipare station. Six bales also arrived in town from Mr Eweu Cameron’s Toanga shed. Messrs Williams and Kettle wero the consignees in both cases.
THE LABOR MARKET.
Tho Labor Journal for Octobor 10 reports :—Tolago Bay : Unskilled labor—l’hore has boon very little work done during this month owing to bad woather, and a largo numbor of mon are idlo in consoquonce, waiting for tho weather to clear before they can rosumo work. Gisboruo : Building trades —Somewhat slack; no now works in hand. Owing to prolonged wot woather, thero has beon a deal of ioßt time. Retail trade (general): Fairly good. Miscellaneous: No demand for farm-hands. Bushfelling slack this season; sufficient labor to supply local requirements. Resumption of freezingworks during tho month will causo reengagement of tho majority of those previously ompioyed at both works. Unskilled labor : Thero is no immediate demand for men at road works, tho various loeal bodies deeming it promaturo to put such in hand just yet. Labor is plentiful at this moment. A great number are awaiting their opportunity of being ongaged on contemplated works. Many seeking work havo arrived in tho district during the month. AN ACCIDENT.
On Tuesday a bush-felling accident occurred at Mr Murphy’s Waiau station. A man named Japousky, a Polo, was engaged with others in felling a tree, when it came down in an upright position, the butt end falling on his foot and pinning him to the ground. His mates had to set to work to cut the treo away to release him from his painful positiou, which operation caused him much agony. Then tho tree fell with a crash on the unfortunate man’s leg, completely fracturing it. The sufferer was put upon a roughlyimprovised bush stretcher, and carried a distance of 25 miles into Tolago, Takapau being made lust night. Dr Williams was telephoned for, and was at Tolago at noon yesterday, when the injured man arrived. He was lodged at the hotel, and arrangements are being made for his removal to tho hospital at Gisborne, probably by tho Waihi. It is feared he may lose his leg, which is badly injured.
