THE HENDERSON MURDER

Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death of Jerry .Driscoll shosv that he was in company with several persons ,'at Henderson, including a woman named Alice Hartley, who had been living with deceased on the gr.mfieids, also Hugh Storey, John Baxter, William Small, and John Kennedy. It is stated that the woman refused to accompany Driscoll to the camp, when Driscoll ‘threatened her. Baxter interfered and threw Driscoll out of the door. Driscoll threatened to kill Baxter with an axe if he came outside. He then appears to have left for his cutup. Later Driscoll was found on the track dead, with a wound on the head, evidently caused by a fall or a blunt instrument. There are no indications of a struggle, and nothing in Baxter’s appearance to indicate a connection with the supposed crime. Baxter when charged with murder refused to make suy statement beyond that ho struck deceased on the night in question. Baxter was charged at the Police Court this morning, and remanded pending an inquest to be held this afternoon. VERDICT OF WILFUL~MURDER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night, The inquest touching the death of Jeremiah Driscoll was held to-day before Mr T. Hutchison, S.M. The jury returned the following verdict : “ Thai Jeremiah Driscoll met his death in consequence of a blow wilfully delivered by John Baxter.” The Foreman stated the jury were of opinion that the murder was not premeditated. The Coroner said the intentions of the man was presumed by the consequence) of what ho did.
