The Victoria College Council last night decided to appoint a professor of biology at L/OO a year, after long discussion over the financial position of the College and scarcity of funds. The Transport Commission continued its sittings to-day. A large number of witnesses were examined yesterday, and many more were waiting to give evidence. Christchurch, last night. The camp of the Orient troopers at Battle Lake was being broken up to-day. A few men who still have some days to remain in quarantine will be accommodated in town. Dunedin, last night, Wilkinson’s chemists’ piemises in George street, were entered yesterday between 3.20 and 6" 15. Jewellery to the value of ten guineas was taken, also money to an amount unknown, and fancy goods. An inquest was held this morning on Francis Robert Shearer, who died from injuries received on the head in the stable of the New Zealand Express Company. A verdict was returned that deceased died from injuries by being accidentally kicked, but the jury did not think there was sufficient evidence to justify an expression of opinion as to whether the horse was unsafe or not.
