SUDDEN DEATH
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Annie Griffiths, a widow, aged 65, was found dead in her dwelling in Pirie street to-day. The cause of deatli was failure of the heart, accelerated by exposure aud alcoholism. AMERICAN LOCOMOTIVES, A Press Association message circulated from Christchurch on Monday, .stating that the Baldwin locomotive engines recently imported from America had jiroved unsuitable lor the work for which they were intended, is, says Mr Ronayne, the general manager of railways, altogether wrong. So far (from these engines having'proved to be white elephants, they have been found to be thoroughly satisfactory. The reason for three engines being laid up at Dunedin is that one or two bridges on the Clinton-Oamaru section of the railway require strengthening to bring them up to the standard before heavier, rolling stock can be used. The engines, asi a matter of fact, are capable of drawing as> heavy, loads as any in the colony.
