SHIPPING TRADE.
MB EENWICK’S IDEAS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, June 13. Mr George Benwick, of Fisher, Renwick, and Co., owners, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, giving evidence before the Steamship Subsidies Committees, said that the foreign governments encouraged and fostered merchant shipping, especially by subsidies. British regulations harassed their own subjects. Foreign ships ought to be 'C treated at British ports the same as British. A suggestion to give British shipowners the entire coast, colonial, and intercolonial trade was infinitely better than a direct subsidy. He advocated the appointment of a Minister of Shipping. He feared that the Navy would be insuffl. cient to protect commerce in war time.
