AN INSANE MOTHER. By Telegraph—Frees Association. Christchuroh, Saturday. Tho body of the child found in the river Avon yesterday has been identified as that of tho daughter of Mr Georgo Loughton, assistant engineer at the hospital. Just after the body was discovered a v/oman was noticed sitting in a plantation ii.rther up tho river, and when asked if she had soon tho body float by replied in a dazod way she had and that tho child was hers. Ab it appeared the woman was suffering from a mental affliction and could givo no account of anything that had happened she was taken in chargo by tho police. Later.—ln the caso of tho drowning of a three-year-old child found in the river yesterday, the mother, Mrs Loughton, wife of an engineer at tho hospital, was committed to the lunatic asylum this morning, after having admitted pushing tho child into the water. She had previously been in tho asylum. At the inquest to-day tho jury declined to accept evidonco as to the woman’s admission, and returned on open verdict.
