BARGAINING WITH THE GOVERNMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association, i Auckland, last night. Mr W. F. Massey addressed a meeting of his constituents at Otahuhu last night. In the course of his speech Mr Massey • said that the Minister for Railways was in Auckland a few months ago, and repeated a promise, stating definitely that the Government would finish the North Island Trunk Line in two years. By doing so the Minister placed the Government in exactly the same position ho (Mr Massey) wanted to get them. On the one hand a general election was approaching; on the other hand they had a promise that the line would be completed in two years, an 1 tho Auckland public should say to the Government, “ If you do not show us that you moan to complete that line in the time specified, then you need expect no support from the Auckland provincial district.” If that were done he believed the line would be completed, or an attempt made to do so. The following motion was carried unanimously : “ That this meeting accord to Mr Massey a hearty vote of thanks for his past services and his present address, and express continued and unabated confidence in him as their member for the * future.”
