LORD HOPETOUN’S RETIREMENT.

CAUSE NOW SAID TO BE INTERFERENCE.

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright

London, May 17. The correspondent of the Manchester Guardian says that Lord Hopetoun’s resignation was due to tho Stato Governors actively trying, presumably instructed by the Home authorities, to mould the opinion of the respective States to bring pressure on the Federal Government and Parliament, especially in the matter of defence. It adds: “ The GovernorGeneral’s position is intolerable and impossible while the State Governors have equal access to the Imperial authorities.”
