POLITICAL ADDRESSES.

STATE BANK AND MUNICIPALISA TION OF GASWORKS'ADVOCATED.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, last night. Messrs Ell and Laurenson, M.H.R.’s, addressed a public meeting here to-night. Abont 150 persons were present, the Mayor presiding. Mr Ell spoke advocating a Government bank, conducted on the lines of the present banks, and at the close proposed ' a resolution that the establishment qf a Government bank was urgently necessary, and would add greatly to the welfare and be a source of profit to the community; that the State should use its own credit, instead of paying for bankers’ credit. The motion was carried by a small majority on a show of hands.

Mr Laurensen spoke more vigorously on municipal reform, especially municipalisation of gas works and rating on unimproved values, and was much applauded. An animated discussion followed on the latter subject, and a motion was carried unanimously that the local authorities should have power of compulsory purchase of gasworks at prices fixed by arbitration. Mr Maslin, exM.H.R., questioned Mr Laurenson re unimproved values, and Mr J. Kent took part in the discussion.
