ALLEGED HIGHWAY ROBBERY.

AN OLD MAN WAYLAID. PROMINENT MEN CHARGED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, last night. At the Magistrate’s Court, Temuka, to-day, two men named Heron and Carr were committed for trial for robbery with violence. The charge was that about midnight on the 25th ult. the two men stuck up an elderly man named Hanna, emptied his pockets, and on his recognising Heron and telling him so, Heron struck him, knocking out several teeth. The evidence showed that Heron was very drunk, and Carr was not so, but the defence in Carr’s case was that he was merely a bystander, not a participant. There is great interest in the case, as Carr is a Temuka Borough Councillor, and Heron a well-to-do young farmer. Bail of .£lO each and sureties of £SO were allowed. The remand bail had been £SOO.
