THE RAILWAY ACCIDENT

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. A cablegram has been received by, the Governor stating 'that a train conveying the Eighth Contingent, proceeding from Durban to the,front, met with an accident at Machavie. Thirteen men were killed and thirteen injured. No officers were killed or injured, it is understood that none of .the men injured or killed were in (he North Island Battalion. There are no particulars as- to how the accident happened. WELLINGTON, last night. The Acting Premier received the following cable early this morning from South Africa through the Gover•nor : The following were killed in a railway accident at Machavie on* the 12th inst. : Private J. Harris, Athol, Southland; Private F a L. D. Lowe, Styx, Canterbury. Private A 11. McDonald, Oamaru. Private V, H. Brown, Sheffield, Canterbury. Private M. Canty, Longbush, Southland. Private P. Rogers, Woodhaugh, Dunedin. Private A. F. Liers (otherwise F. Foss), Waihi, Auckland. Private R. Osborne, Middlemarch, Otago. Private J. Bruce, Oamaru. Private J. Maloney, Little River, Canterbury. Private C. Bourne, Christchurch. Private C. Simpson (relatives' unknown). Private J. IL Jones, Southland. DANGEROUSLY INJURED.' The following were dangerously injured Private H. Brown, Denniston, Westport. Private Alfred E. Pearson, Oamaru, Private William C. Grant, Middlemarch, Otago. Corporal D. L. Whitehead, Dunedin, Private T,. Lee, .Woodlands, Southland. Private W. Wheeler, Waikouaiti. SEVERELY INJURED, "* The following were severely injured, in the accident Private Charles Jones, Dunedin, Private Walter Devon, Gummerburn, Otago. Private Nicholas L, Thomas, Waimate. Private William Turner, Outram, Private Henry R. Plumridge, Sprey-r don, Canterbury. SLIGHTLY INJURED, The slightly injured are : Private John Edgar, Queenstown, Private Jas. C. Watt. CHRISTCHURCH, last night. Mr C. F, Bourne, headmaster of Christchurch College, has received a cable confirming the news of the accident to the Eighth, and stating that his son is amongst the killed. There is great anxiety here. WELLINGTON, last night, Government are advised that 6076 Private R. Lyness is amongst those seriously injured in the railway accident to the Eighth Contingent.
