GOOD FIND OF COAL.
Greymoutli, last night. At a meeting of tbo Harbor Board tonight the Foreman of the Bare Hole at Dobson reported that he had struck a seam of 4ft 9in of coal at 556 feet. After boring 12ft 6in he struck a seam of 12ft, splendid coal. He bored lift further to make sure that he had got through it all. He does not think there is much use in going further. The Board decided to push
on with another bore about Jialf a mile below Dobson. The- unanimous opinion of the Board is that the discovery is of immense importance, as it points to tho existence of enormous coal fields of the best coal at a moderate depth, and quoted Mr McKay’s opinion on the matter.
TECHNICAL EDUCATION. Christchurch, last night. A conference appointed by delegates from local bodies to consider the advancement of technical education decided to request local rating bodies to form a guarantee fund of £SOO to organise an associated class under the Manual Technical Education Act. •
TENTH CONTINGENT.
At a meeting of the executive to-night regarding the send-off to the Tenth Contingent, it was arranged to give the men a supper in the Agricultural on Friday. The Hons. Walker, Hall-Jones, Carroll, and Sir Joseph Ward have promised to be present, also Major-General Babington and staff. On Saturday the contingent will march from the camp through the city, entraining at noon for Lyttelton.
NAPIER MAYORALTY.
Napier, last night. Mr H. P. Cohen, for many years a member of the Borough Council, has acceded to a numerously signed requisition asking him to contest the Mayoralty’. The candidates likely to be nominated are Mr Cohen and Mr S. Carnell, formerly M.H.B. for Napier. The contest between the two will probably bo close.
HAULAGE CHARGES.
Tho Napier Harbor Board, at their meeting to-day, resolved to reduce tho haulage charges on goods landed at tho breakwater to 9d per ton.
DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER. Nelson, last night. A very old settler, and one who was engaged in the local coasting trade from the early days, Capt. Walker, died to-day, aged seventy-two. His death occurrod on the fiftieth anniversary of his wedding. He was long engaged in the coaling trade.
ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. - Hokitika, last night. The annual meeting of tho Westland Acclimatisation Society was held this evening. The annual report of tho Curator of the Kanieri Lake hatchery and of the President showed that excellent work was being done. It is confidently expected that in a few years the Westland streams will furnish very prolific trout fishing. The Rev. Mr Hawkins was elected President for the ensuing year.
