ARBITRATION COURT.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, last night. At the Arbitration Court Alfred Banks was fined 20s and costs for having employed a journeyman butcher for more than 56 hours per week. F. R. Bust, for having employed more than the stipulated number of boys, was fined a similar sum. A dispute filed by the Letterpress Printers’, Machinists and Lithographers Union, which was heard by the Conciliation- Board nearly twelve months ago, was partly taken. The employers intimated that they would be willing to accept the Christchurch award of 48 hours per week, with a minimum wage of £2 10s. The Court also partly heard a dispute filed by the Typographical Union with regard to rates of pay, the scale of piece charges, etc., for hand compositors. The demands are contained in 36 paragraphed items, but negotiations with the employers had reduced the items in dispute to five. Those’ referred to hours (44) and wages (£3 5s for day work and £3 12s 6d for night work per week, and Is Id per 1000 ens for piece work); charge for work done with type largor than standard size ; full use of piece system on newspapers worked under that system, aod east up of type by lower case alphabet as against en quad. Evidence was given in support of the Union’s demand. It was agreed by both sides that overtime should be made one and a third extra all round. The Secretary of the Union intimated that he would be prepared to accept a compromise on wages of £3 2s 6d. Further evidence in these two cases will be taken in the country districts.
