NATIVE LANDS.
AN IMPORTANT DECISION. LANDS TO BE ROADED AND THROWN OPEN. On the arrival of the Hon. J. Carroll from the Coast last evening he had a conference with the Premier, representative native chiefs also being present and taking part in the consultation. The subject under discussion was that of dealing with the native land placed at the disposal of the Government for settlement purposes, the area amounting to about a million acres. It was decided that the lands should be roaded and thrown open for settlement as speedily as possible. A confirmatory meeting will be held next week at Papawai, in the Wairarapa district. The decision of the natives and the Government will have a most important bearing on the future of this district.
