By Telegraph—Press Association. New Plymouth, last night. A fire occurred at half-past eleven in a residence attached to Hurle’s Cycle Depot, in Devon street, opposite the White Hart Hotel. Delay occurred in giving the alarm, and the brigade did not arrive for several minutes. In the meantime a small hose from the hotel got to work, and checked the flames, and the brigade on arrival soon put the fire out. The contents of the kitchen, where the fire apparently started, and the adjoining rooms was badly damaged by fire and water. There was no insurance on the contents. The South British is interested in the building, but the amount is not available.
At the Education Board meeting to-day the financial position of the Board under the new scale was seriously discussed. Eventually it was decided to send the Chairman to Wellington to lay before the Minister a statement of the financial position ana requirements, and inform the Minister that unless the grant was increased the Board could not carry on. Twelve months’ leave of absence was granted to any female teachers selected for South Africa, and their places are to be kept open.
