INVERCARGILL NEWS.
GLENHAM ESTATE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Invercargill, last night. There was no rush for Gleuham Estate, near Wyndham, purchased by tho Government and cut up. Ten sections have been taken up. S. Thompson, Albury, secured tho homestead block, 540 acres. E. Cartwright, South Taieri, was the only other outsido applicant. Twonty-fivo sections are open for selection. LABOR LAWS. Tho Victorian Commission to take evidence re our factory and shop legislation opened here to-day. The local men who gave evidence were mostly in favor of tho arbitration principle and court, but few approved of tho Conciliation Board. One said they certainly had had no strikes, but he would rather have good faith than continual discontent between men and masters. The former, he said, no sooner got an award of tho Court than they set to to plan for another advantage. As to wages it was stated that the legislation made little difference, but kept employers prone to sweating in their place. A fixed wage for dressmakers was objected to, soino not being worth it. Conciliation and arbitration was held to be better than tho Victorian Wages Board. Tho Commission resumes to-morrow. A GOOD HARVEST. There has been no rain in Southland recently, and harvesting is proceeding satisfactorily.
