The Premier has wired to Mr Witheford, in reply to his suggestion to use the Te Papapa camp for tue Tenth Contingent, that tho ports of departure will be settled later.
Napier, Gisborne, Invercargill, Timaru and Dunedin are claiming the honor Oi sending off the Tenth Contingent. The Devon arrives here early on lueslay, and ships horses on Tuesday after noon.
Replying to a complaint that no meat supplies to the troopships was obtained in Auckland, the Premier wires that the Defence Department has had nothing whatever to do with the supplying of meat if obtained in New Zealand. The contractors take the officers, men, and horses at so much per head, arid the Department has no right to dictate to them where to get their meat and stores from.
It has been decided to purchase two pianos for the Ninth Contingent, on the understanding thut they are to be sold on irrival in South Africa, and the money levoted to a fund to ereCb memorials to New Zealanders who have fallen in the war.
