BAND CONTEST.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) New Plymouth, last night.
At the Band Contest the B Fiat Solo Cornet contost resulted : Parker (Wellington), 79, 1; J. Richards (Granity Creek), 77, 2 ; E. Kerr (Kaikorai), 77, 3. There wero 20 competitors. Tho following aro the results of the euphonium solos competition, decided this aftornoon :—W. Stainos, Denniston, 80; A. Martin, Wanganui, 80; S. Groaning, Potone, 79; J. Flint, North-East Valley, 78; J. A. O’Brien, Duondin Navals, 77;
P. Toombs, Palmerston North, 74; W. Bevan, Granity Creek, 72 ; R. Dighton, Waipawa, 66 ; T. Gray, Wanganui, 65 ; A. Donne, Gisborne, 65 ; A. W. Russell, Masterton, 66 ; John Cosgrove, Waipavva, 60 ; T. B. Booth, Hauraki, 50. The final test selections are being played this ovoning. Up to 10 p.m. all had played but Dunedin Navals, North-east Valley, Wellington, and Kaikoura, who perform in that order. The results are not expected till 1 a.tn. A largo audience was present at the benefit performance in the Recreation Grounds to day, for the widow of the engine-driver Nyhane. It was very successful. The bauds were massed, and played as one to the grounds, under Bandmaster Herd, tho effect being very fine. The contest has been a great financial success. A good many bands will be away by to-morrow's trains.
FINAL TEST SELECTION.

New Plymouth, last night. At the North Island Band Association Contest tho final tost selection took place this evoning, when tho Theatre was packed. A start was made at 5.30, so as to get through before midnight. The draw for the order of competing resulted as follows :—Granity Creek, Waihi, Taranaki, Ruahine, Wanganui, Denniston, Masterton, Palmerston, Hauraki, Dunedin
Navals, North East Valley, Wellington,
and Ivaikorai last. The points for this selection (Lobreo) were added to tho first test piece, gems from Sullivan. Keen interest was taken in tho result, and the performance of each band was followed with pleasure, tho applause for good work being very hearty. Wanganui gave a splendid interpretation, and Masterton showed great improvement over the work in the first test. Granity Creek put in a ylot of expressive music. Waihi and Palmerston wore more successful in tho full parts than in the solo work. Ruahine displayed considerable merit. Denuiston was slightly rough in the softer parts, but good in tho full chords. Hauraki put in some telling work in all the movements. Dunedin Navals gave a very fine, powerful performance. The North JEast Valiev was effective all through, and in parts brilliant, especially the finale. Wellington met with a great reception, and -gave a masterly performance, find both solo accompaniments well maintained their reputation. It was a much finer exhibition than in the first test. Wellington should stand a good chance of being top prize on the list. Kaikorai have still to play, so .the result of the contest will not bo given till after the close of the telegraph office.
