FOOTBALL. (By Tolegraph—Press Association.) Dunedin, last night. •The annual report of the Otago Rugby Football Union states that the season commenced with a balance in hand ol ±9B. There is now a credit balance of ±‘629. The assets amount to ±782, and 1 there is a contingent liability of ±25. An appeal is made to players and clubs to strengthen tho hands of tho incoming I committee in the preserving of the sport f free from tho evils by which a popular I amusement is always liablo to be at- i tacked. 1 SUPREME COURT. At the Supremo Court Henry Gardiner was found guilty of assaulting a Crimean veteran, and was admitted to probation for two years, and to pay eight guineas towards the expenses. John Spence aDd V/illiam Quan pleaded guilty to a oharge of assault, and were ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. THE CAMP. A speoial train with 190 horses for the Ninth Contingent arrived to-day. Thore are now sufficient to horse three squadrons. The total number in camp is now 459. DREDGING. The Glonrock Co., Macetown, cleaned up for February 81oz 17dwt lOgr gold from 135 tons, while 19 tons of concentrates treated yielded G6oz gold. METHODIST CONFERENCE. Seventy-ono Ministerial and lay delegates to the Methodist Conference, which meets to-morrow, arrived by train from North to-night. The Presidential address will be delivered to morrow evening. DEATH OF PIONEER. Mr J. C. Smith, of Ettrick, an old goldfields pioneer, who was thrown out of a cart a fortnight ago, died last night from the injuries.
