I/ANE AND CAVILL WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. (Per Press Association). WANGANUI, last night. The Australasian Swimming Championship Meeting commenced to-day. The weather was fine save for a tew showers. The sport was excellent, and great interest was taken in the appearance of the Australian champions. The following were the results of the principal events • 100 yds Maiden Handicap: E. W. Johnson (Collegiate School), scratch, 1 : J. A. Pownall (Wanganui), 2 sec., 2 ; J. Lastley (T.G.M.1.), 3. 220 yards Championship of Australasia : Lane (N.S.W.), 1 ; Gailey (of Queensland), 2. Gailey finished 10s behind Lane. The time was 2 mm. IS secs. Lane’s previous Australasian record was 2 min. 38 l-athsec., at »Svdnev, on March 4th, 1901. , Champion, of Wellington, was the cnly other starter for the champion--5175 yds Handicap (open) : The final heat was won by Gailey, of Queen* land) ; Hunter (I-lawera), - , Aitkei (Wanganui), 3.
