RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING.

Christchurch, last night. Forty-three entries have been received in the North Canterbury district for the Bifle Association meeting at Trentham.

A SUICIDE

At the inquest on Major Cunningham, who shot himself in Linwood cemetery this morning, a verdict was returned of suicide while temporarily insane.

CONCILIATION BOARD.

The Conciliation Board met to-day, and heard the evidence on both sides in the tailors’ dispute. Before making a recommendation the Board will take evidence at Ashburton and Timaru. SCHOOL OF ABTS.

The new building of the Canterbury College of the School of Arts was opened to-night by the Minister of Education, and the annual distribution of prizes to the students took place. BUTCHEBS’ PBOTEST.

At a meeting of the butchers’ to-night it was decided to oppose the erection of the abattoirs on the site proposed by the City Council as being too far from the city and inconvenient to the butchers, who would have to drive the stock four miles from the market, and cart the meat in some instances over ten mile 3 to the shops.

AN APPOINTMENT.

Mr A. Jack, engineer in charge of the railway construction on the WaiparaCheviot section, has been appointed lieut.-paymaster in She South Island Battalion of the Ninth Contingent, and leaves immediately to take up duty.
