LUMPERS STRIKE

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright

Sydney, Feb. 20. There is a strike of the coal lumpers engaged in coaling the Union Company’s steamer Aorangi. They allege that ships like her have hitherto been coaled only by unionists. This trip some non-unionists were employed. After an interview with the Attorney-General, the secretary of the Lumpers’ Union promised to recommend the men to return to work on the understanding that the old terms of employment of unionists only be adhered to. At a meeting of the men it was decided not to resume until an official reply had been received from New Zealand confirming recognition of the statement that hitherto only unionists had been employed.
