POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB’S MEETING.
[By Early Biro. |
Thekb is every prospect of fine weather for the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s Summer Meeting, which commences at Makaraka to-day; and, as good acceptances have been received for,the various events, there should be a large attendance. The course is at present in first-class order, and the Club have left no stone unturned to ensure good raciug. Mr H. Piper will wield the Hag, and the public can, therefore, rely on the fields being despatched on even terms. The fact of to-day being a holiday from noon should be an extra inducement to draw a record attendance. The Club have arranged for the Italian string band at present visiting Gisborne to supply music on both days. The programme opens with the Makauri Handicap, of 20 sovs., which has a field of five. The winner will be sold by auction, with engagements, for five pounds, and the surplus over the selling price will he divided equally between the owner of the second horse and the race fund. Cossack and l’aria are the most likely pair to carry off this event, and, if Mr Clark decides to start the Albert gelding, he should about win. My selection is :
Paria ... ... ... ... 1 Cossack ... 2 Bob 3
The County Stakes has ten acceptors, Mr Clarke’s pair Paria and Papatu heading the list. Paria is engaged in the previous race, and Papatu will, therefore, be tiio one selected. Unique, with 8.2, is well in with regard to weight, but, through a mishap last week, is an unlikely starter. Craftsman, on his form last week, must run well forward, as also should Vathek and Tyuodale. I shall venture the following :
Mr Clark’s selected 1 Craftsman ... ... ... 2 Vathek 3 The Maiden Scurry" is likely to attract a field of eleven. lam informed on reliable authority that Kohiue registered a good gallop on Mouday, and her party arc sanguine about the Torpedo mare’s chance. Spungold arrived from Wellington yesterday, and his chance is highly spoken of. Soultina is bound to have a host of followers, as also is Tynedale and Ikatere, They may finish in the following order : Tynedale or Kohine 1 Spungold ... ... ... 2 Soultina 3 Tho Turanga Stakes Handicap, of 110 sovs., should he the race of the day, and
the winner is well concealed. Materoa, 9.12, has improved very little sinco last week, but has certainly none the best of the weights. The Torpedo mare would require to be at her best to win this race. Red Lamer ran a great race in the mile and a distanco last week, and during the interval may have came on. He would have to improve considerably to beat Wilson, 8.8, who is just now in great form. The Dauphin gelding was certainly the best conditioned horse at the Park meeting, and as he has only incurred a penalty of three pounds his party may reasonably bo sanguine as to his chance of success. Destroyer, 7.8, is fancied in some quarters on accouut of having beaten Wilson at Wairoa. Geologist, 6.10, and Craftsman, 6.7, are the light weights, and of the pair Mr McDonald's gelding should be the safest to follow : Wilson ... ... ... 1 Geologist ... ... ... 2 Destroyer ... ... ... 3 The Telephone Handicap has a great field of thirteen, Geologist, 9.0, being awarded the place of honor. Rosiphele, Victoria Cros, Craftsman, and Vathek are all well treated, and to select three to fill the places, I like
Victoria Cross 1 Rosiphele . ... 2 Vathek ... 3 The First Handicap Hurdles should furnish a good race, aud numbers should no up somewhat as follows : Mr Blake’s selected 1 Rodara ... ... ... 2 Cronje ... ... ... ••• 3 The Handicap Hack Flat has nine engaged, and the winning trio may be : Papatu or Hinetapuariki ... 1 Waionui 2 Medaliious ... 3
The day’s racing concludes with the Flying Handicap, and on his running last week, Geologist, 6.11, should about win. Geologist 1 Rosiphele ••• 2 Victoria Cross ... ... 3
From a reliable source we loarn that Materoa will not start in the Turanga Stakes to day. The mare has not yet got over her trouble with regard to bleeding, and her owner not deem it wise to start her in the race to-day. The withdrawal of Materoa reduces tho field in the Turanga Stakes to five, but the rnce still bears a very open appearance. Mr Harding has been very unfortunate during the past few months both with Materoa ahd her stable mate Tauhei, both horses running in Auckland with the hardest of luck. The sporting public of Gisborne have stuck loyally to the huia colors upon all occasions, and can heartily sympathise with the popular owner of Materoa in the hard luck which he has experienced. We hopo to be able to chronicle a good win for the stable in the near future,
