LIBEL ACTION.
PAFER SLANDERS ITS OWN CORRESPONDENT.
By Telegraph—Pass Association. Wellington, last night.
At the Supreme Court to day, a case was heard in which Victor Braund claimed £750 damages for libel from the publishers of the Pahiatua Herald. Mr Braund, who is au accountant and commission agent, is also engaged in press agency work. He sent a telegram early in November to the Herald with reference »o a meeting of creditors held here. This report was subsequently alleged by the Herald to-be inaccurate, and it published a leader making that statement, and saying that it would refuso to receive any more messages from him. Piaintili now suggested that defendants thereby meant that he had been guilty of dishonorable and unprofessional conduct, and that he was a man of untruthful and dishonorable character ; that consequently he had been injured in credit and reputation. Defendants admitted publication, but denied that it was false and malicious. They declared that Braund’s message was inaccurate and misleading, and that their statements had been true in substance, and were fair comment.
The jury gave a verdict for plaintiff for £SO damages. Judgment was entered up accordingly, with costs and disbursements.
