TUBERCULOSIS.
OUTBREAK IN OTAGO SCHOOLS
(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, last night.
At the Education Board to-day the matter of the outbreak of tuberculosis among pupils at Ivurow and Duntroon schools came up. Dr Symes, Health Officer, submitted a report in which ne agreed with the opinion of Dr Stevens, that overcrowding and bad ventilation have probably been important factors in the serious outbreak, though some other causes may have contributed to it. The Board's architect submitted a report of alterations required at Kurow school, costing £33, and these were ordered to be carried out. It was resolved that the matter being one of grave colonial importance the Government be asked to cause a complete inquiry to be made into the cause or causes’ of repeated outbreaks of tuberculosis at Kurow, with special reference to its appearance amongst -stlioo' children. It was stated that if the outbreak was due to the schoolhouse the colony was face to face with the question of rebuilding nearly all its schools.
