In connection with the controversy regarding the proposal for intervention in the American-Spanish war, Viscount Cranborne, speaking in the House of Commons, stated that Sir Julian Pauncefote, at the verbal suggestion of his diplomatic colleagues at Washington, convened a mooting of ambassadors for April 14th, 1898. Tho British Government informed Sir Julian Pauucefote that the proposed collective note was injudicious, and that Great Britain would take no action. Tho Government was not aware then of the views of Germany. The Washington correspondent of the Times states that Sir Julian Pauncefote and Count Holleben were the only ambassadors at the meeting hot for intervention. Sir Julian Pauncpfote tried to moderato the views of his colleagues.
