AUCKLAND SPECIAL.
THE NINTH CONTINGENT. (Special to Times.; Auckland, last night. Last evening fifty members of tho Ninth Contingent for South Africa met tho Elingamite from Gisborne in the expectation of receiving one hundred and fifty horsos from that place. The Stock Department at Gisborne wired the Stock Department here that the horses were aboard. After the troopers had traversed from Te Papapa there was much disappointment when it was found that no horses were aboard. PERSONAL.
Mr Neale, veterinary surgeon from Gisborne, arrived from Whangarei on Saturday night. He has been on a visit to Whangarei and inland from that place. Only thirty-five horses were purchased in that latitude. Mr Edgar Thomson, a Gisbornite who was educated at the Gisborne school, and son of Mr J. Thomson, formerly engineer for the Gisborne Harbor Board, left for Melbourne this evening to finish his studies at the Melbourne University as a civil engineor. Mr Edgar Thomson intends to return to New Zealand in twelve months. Mr C. R. Neale, of Gisborne, has been appointed Government Veterinary Officer in charge of the Ninth Contingent.
