WELLINGTON SPECIAL

A QUEER STORY

(Special to Times.) Wellington, last night. The police are satisfied that there is nothing to warrant their interference in regard to tho reported death of a young woman after a dental operation. She had -■ome teeth drawn, and after recovering from tho effects of the ether was removed to her home. Her death occurred some lays afterwards, and two doctors arc prepared to certify that the cause was due to pneumonia. CONSOLIDATED LOAN.

A poll is to be taken to-morrow on the proposal to consolidate loans amounting to £830,G00 for tramways, street paving, and a town hall. The sums necessary for each of these works have already been authorised, hut the consolidating proposals will simplify the raising of the money, and enable the Corporation to strike on a special rate, not necessarily to be levied, as security for the whole amount. It is anticipated that tho proposals will be easily carried. PECULIAR RUMORS. Rumors of a peculiar character are current regarding an officer who has been temporarily in charge of a department uot unconnected with an important statistical branch of the Public Service. It is alleged that ho has been missing from his office for the host part of a week, that considerable inconvenience has been caused to those who strictly observe tho Lenten season, and that in the end he has, by Ministerial command, been superseded pending an official investigation. PREMIER TESTIMONIAL. It is understood that the views of the Wellington Committee which has charge of the proposed testimonial to the Premier before he leaves for England is that the idea of giving him a purse of sovereigns should be made subsidiary to the testimonial acknowledging his great services as a patriot, and that this will bo tho guiding spirit of the resolutions to bo proposed at the public meeting which is to bo held here to-morrow night.
