The Janet Waldorf Season.

It is not so frequent an occurrence in Gisborne that the visit of an artisto of the standing of Miss Janet Waldorf can be passed over without more than the ordinary or passing notice, and it is our pleasing duty to inform the theatre-going public that tho organisation headed by this charming young American actress is one of the finest of its class that has ever visited New Zealand, and certainly .Gisborne has never yet enjoyed the felicity of witnessing so delightful a performer as Miss Janet Waldorf, who is to inaugurate a season of drama on Saturday next. Miss Waldorf has earned an enviable reputation in all the larger cities of tho United States and the East, and on setting forth on her tour round the world was strongly advised to visit the colonies, which trip she is now engaged upon, with the greatest pleasure to herself both socially and financially. The plays to be produced during the season here comprise some of tho best-known and most-popular dramatic works in the whole realm of drama, including some of the most-fascinating plays of William Shakespeare, which will be. produced with all attention to detail as to dress, scenery, and stage effect. The pieces chosen from the Company’s repertoire for production here are: —“Ingomar” (Mario Lovell), “ Camille ” (Dumas), “ Romeo and Juliet ” (Shakespeare), “ Lady of Lyons ” (Lytton), and “ The Merchant of Yenico ” (Shakespeare). The opening piece will bo that thrillingly-intcresting drama “ Ingomar,” depicting in the most glorious language and picturesque setting the influence of pure womanhood over tho mere man, and, as the charming Greek girl Parthenia, Miss Waldorf has scored repeated successes, and only recently the Right Hon. the Premier, after witnessing the performance, went behind the scenes and congratulated Miss Waldorf on her great tuccess. As Ingomar, Mr Norval Mac"regor is seen at his best, the part of the barbarian chief suiting admirably his ' manly, vigorous stylo of acting. The box-plan for the season will be opened at Miller’s this morning, when doubtless there iviU be an eager demand for seats. Day sales may also be obtained at Miller’s. The Company should enjoy a highly-successful season in Gisborne.
