REPLY FROM DEFENCE MINISTER

By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night.

Captain Jaekson-Palmer, M.H.R., who volunteered for service in South Africa, received the following telegram from the Defence Minister:—“Your volunteering for South Africa docs you credit, and I would gladly grant you a commission wore it not that I last session refused Captain Symes, and this time intend to give tho same reply to Captain Lethbridge. I am afraid, considering that your constitution is not over strong, that tho hardships would do you permanent injury. Tho example shown stands out in bold relief to your credit, and I thank you very much therefor.—R. J. Seddon.” Mr JaeksonPalmer telographed urging the Minister to reconsider his decision.
