WELLINGTON SPECIAL.
LUNCHEON FOR TROOPERS.
(Special to Times.) Wellington, last night. Tho statement was made at a meeting of the Eighth Contingent Send-off Committee to-day, in explanation of the trouble experienced in getting someone to cater for a luncheon to the troopers when they leave on their departure from Wellington next Wednesday, that the main problem facing the caterers was that of labor. It was impossible to get waiters and waitresses, especially just now in view of the race meeting, bowling tournament, and other festive gatherings of the week. A case was cited in which waitresses were said io have cost as much as £1 each a day. All the same the troopers are to have their luncheon, although it is likely to cost a shilling a lioad more than paid on previous occasions of the kind. KAWHIA HOT SPRINGS. Dr. Malcgill, District Health Officer at Auckland, has been visiting Ilawhia to examine the hot mineral springs which exist there, and which it was thought might possess curative qualities. report to tho Health Department is not altogether favorable. The springs are near the sea beach, and are salty. LUNCHEON TO GEN. BABINGTON. Replying to the toast of his health at a luncheon given to-day on board the troopship Surrey, MajorGeneral Babington, the new commandant of tho New Zealand forces, said he could speak from exporieneo of the Now Zealanders and of tho Imperial forces. He had had the honor of commanding the New Zealanders, Fourth Contingent, in South Africa. He found them of the best, and never heard a word other than praise of the Fourth or of the men of any of tho New Zealand Contingents. Any British officers who. had had the good fortune to command the New Zealanders were always afterwards anxious to have New , Zealanders under them. He had been honestly astonished at the welcome accorded him to New Zealand when he arrived yesterday, and he would do his very best to serve the colony. The day he j felt he could no longer servo-tho colony, that day would find him leaving it. !,
