OCEANIC COMPANY.
THE FIGHT FOR THE MAIL SERVICE.
ARE AMERICANS FOREIGNERS’? By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright Sydney, Jan. 19. Messrs Burns, Philp and Co., in a letter to the Press, reply to the criticism on a provious letter in reference to the proposed Oceanic mail service. They admit that the company is a foreign one, but say there are “ foreigners ” and “ foreigners.” They claim that the term as applied by Australians to Americans is very different in spirit to the meaning generally attached to it. “ AVe do not,” tho letter states, “ ourselves anticipate that if any distinct gain is to bo obtained byAustralia it will be rejected because of the associated branch of the Anglo-Saxon race whose home is America. With regard to the criticism that it is intended to leave New Zealand out.in the cold, it is again urged that New Zealand will bo much better served by the proposed connecting line than the present three-weekly service, though the steamers do call at Auckland.
