LATE CABLE NEWS.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrigb'. London, Jan. IS. In the House of Commous Mr Cham berlain urged that there should be no relaxation of precaution until normal conditions wore restored. The references to the soldiers in the King's speech at the opening of Parlia ment have been favorably commented upon on the Continent. The Government decline to publish the heliograms passed between General Buffer and White whilst tho latter was besieged at Ladysmith.
Many newspapers express delight at Mr Seddon’s speech at Wellington, and the patriotic demonstration.
In the House of Commons Mr Balfour stated that no official assurances had boon asked by Germany in reference to Mr Chamberlain’s speech, which led to the outburst of Anglophobia. In an unofficial conversation Lord Lausdownehad pointed out to the German Ambassador that Mr Chamberlain had made no charges of barbarity against the Germans or other armies, tho Government considering that there was nothing in the speech that required qualification or withdrawal. The House cheered the statement.
Lord Kitchener’s despatches of December Sth mentioned Lieut. G. D. Shorn for gallantry in attacking a laager at Pongolabosch and for good services ; Sergt. J. Davidson and Lance-Corporal W. Rutherford for bringing in the wounded under heavy fire all belonging to tho New Zealand Seventh Regiment; Sergt. J. AValker, Fourth New Zealand Rifios, for capturing, unaided, three armed Boers on a farm at Standerton. A number of Australians are also mentioned. Reuter’s Agency states that Dr. von Kuyper, the Netherlands Premier, afterascertaining the terms on which the Boers’ delegates were willing to negotiate peace, visited London privately to ascertain if Lord Salisbury genuinely desired to answer the questions. In the House of Lords Lord Salisbury stated that he was not aware that Kuypor had made overtures of peace.
