Ernest Hugo Tarras was found dead in bed in an hotel this morning. A bottle supposed to have contained poison was found at his bedside. lie was master of the German Government launch, and was discharged yesterday. He was a single man, aged about 40. NEW PLYMOUTH. Schreiner, who escaped from the gaol on Monday, was captured by Constable Beattie at Urenui, about twenty miles from here, at 2 o’clock this morning. WELLINGTON. Mr J. 11. Otto Schwartz, of Wellington, has been selected aN Judge of the approaching North Island Brass Bands Association contest at New Plymouth. Cable advices have been received from London that negotiations for amalgamation of the Phoenix and Atlas Fire Insurance Companies have been broken off. Sergeant-Major Smith, mentioned in this morning’s cables as having been killed at Zivanvater, hails from Wellington. Deceased went with the
Sixth Contingent, and was one of those selected for a commission in the Eighth. Out of seventeen applicants, Mr R. H. Smith, who has had a brilliant career in English and Continental schools, has been appointed art instructor at the Wellington Technical School.
The Primitive Methodist Conference further debated this morning the question of Methodist Union, and adjourned the discussion till Monday. DUNEDIN. The criminal statistics at Dunedin for the year ended December 31 show 56’S arrests for drunkenness, as against 598 in the previous year; 113 prohibition orders were issued, as against ,S 3 ; minor thefts were I 111, as against 110. On the civil side the plaints entered numbered 3591, as against 2990. The respective amounts sued for were £57,319 and £37.500. The amounts recovered were £3-1,925 and £23,344. The large increase in the amounts was undoubtedly due to calls in connection with the dredging industry.
