An article recently appeared in a French journal published at the New Hebrides suggesting a desperate appeal to the French Government in favor of , definite annexation of the islands. ’ Vmoiig other assertions made were these :—That England showed no interest in the question except to please ardent politicals of the Australian Commonwealth, who alone oppose the Cabinet in London in leaving France to exercise sovereignty over the archipelago ; that commercial transactions with Australia would he improved by France annexing ; and that the weakness of the Mixed Commission was taken advantage of by, amongst others, certain Presbyterian missionaries, who disregard all proests. The eights of the French were trampled on without remonstrance having any effect. The Foreign Mission Committee of the Presbyterian Church in Australia has discussed the article, and in a letter to the press traversing the statements allege that every statement made therein in reference to Great Britain, the Commonwealth and a the Preshvterian missionaries is conrs trary to'fact. If for “certain Presbyterian missionaries ” was substituted “ certain French colonists ” the
real state of affairs would he truthfully described. The Presbyterian mis-, sionaries, in addition to their special work, always sought to protect the natives against the labor traffic, and the aggression of unscrupulous white men. Another letter from an ex-resident of the group, says the agitation for French annexation is directed principally by interested officials desirous to acquire the New Hebrides as an exclusive recruiting ground for New Caledonian plantations. It suggests that it would be much cheaper now to buy out the French than in ten or twenty years hence. Obituary : Captain Mossop, of the steamer Victoria, trading to New. Zealand.
