“It is really time that the British farmer asserted himself,” says the Daily Chronicle in a recent issue. “It has been bad enough up to the present that be should allow Denmark and Normandy to monopolise our egg market on the ground that poultry farming doesn't pay. But now New Zealand is preparing to supply our breakfast tables with eggs treated by a chemical process, which is warranted to make them keep for three years. The mere idea of an egg three years old is, except to a Chinaman, an outrage. "Will no one infuse vigour into our farmers, or moderation into our railway companies, that we may bo able to get an egg from less than ten thousand miles away ? "
