WATER SUPPLY.
(To the Editor of the Times ) Sib, —In your last issue Mr Tharratt takes up the cudgels of the working man in regard to a water supply, but intentionally or otherwise, instead of being a working man’s advocate he has made his cause that of the absentee landlord who screws out his rent, but cares nothing for the health of the community. Messrs Lysnar and Whinray rncroly posed as engineers, but Mr Tharratt, in helping to form the triple allianco, goes a few bettor—he is doctor, engineer, and economist as well. First ho says it is not for the sake of health. If a professional gentleman said that who would say ho is no fool? Waihiroro is too porous, we are told noxt. Well, I prefer Drummond, Boylan, and Mestayer to tho three amateur engineers who have arison. Then says Mr Tharratt, “We oannot afford it.” There wo havo tho root of tho whole opposition; it is nothing but meanness. We cannot afford to pay the penalty entailed in Bickness by not having water and drainage, but there are some opulent people who care not a straw how many people are laid to rest at Makaraka, so long as they can avoid paying a few more pence in rates. Mr Tharratt need not trouble about tho working man. The latter likes clean and a bath as well as anyone, and ho is not too mean to pay his share towards it. If tho working man had tho decld. ing of the question, Gisborno would have, had water and drainage long ago.— I arm, etc., A Working Man.
‘ 5 (j.To the Editor of the Times.) • ■ Sir., —Working men ought to be thankful to Mr Tharratt for taking the load in opposing tho wator supply scheme. 4 * tho public meeting all tho speakers .Mcpting the Mayor were members of professions (including commerce as a profession). How could Mr Tharratt expect working men to stand up and debate with such an array of talent?— I am, etc., Worker.
