STRANGE CASE.
ASTONISHING CLAIMS BY A UNION. 1 By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, last night. \ The Conciliation Board took evidence j to-day in a case in which the Coalminers’ Union sought for a reinstatement in the | Allandale coal mine of Fred Loades, with I the payment of 10s per day since October 11th. Loades was the local secretary, and j was appointed delegate to attend a meet- | ing at Kaitangata. Ho applied ior leave, j but did not get a definite reply, as the mine was very busy owing to t-ho flood- : ing of the Shag Point mine. Loades went away, and another man was put in iris place. On his return he was told that he could take his tools out of the mine. The Union sought to show that the dismissal was due to his connection with the. Union, and for information alleged to have been given to the Coal Mines Commission. This was denied by the Allandale Company, who contended that Loades had dismissed himself. An offer had been made to take him back, but no reply was received. The Board took time to consider, as it was not clear that it had jurisdiction.
