AUCKLAND NEWS.

In reply to representations by Mr Napier, the Defence Minister states that ho will authorise an advance of Ho to each returned trooper, In the Police Court yesterday Harold ■Johnson was remanded on a charge of stealing £258, the property of the Direct General Importing Company, Christchurch. To-day another man namod ■John Paul was before the Court on the same charge, and S'JS flJso remanded to Christchurch.

An elderly man named Dudley Eyre has been charged with the theft of 1228 at Wanganui as far back as 1887, and was remanded to Wanganui.

SPECIAL PRAYERS. On the Sunday before Christmas the Primate wishes all the people of the diocese to oiler special prayers to Almighty God in relation to the deplorable state of affairs in South Africa. He has asked other Bishops to observe the day in like manner. PLAY HOUSE SYNDICATE.Some time ago it was notified proposals wero on foot for thee rection of a new play house in Auckland. The arrangements are now completed. It is expected the theatre will be ready by December of 1902. The syndicate formed to carry out the proposals have secured about threequarters of an acre in Queen street, upon which it is intended to build a handsome block, at a cost of £20,000 or more. This will contain a row of shops, suites of offices, commercial travellers’ club, and an arcade leading to the theatre at the back.

SEQUEL TO RECENT INQUIRY.

A sequel to the Government inquiry into the management of tho Jubilee Institute for Blind was set down for hearing at the Magistrate’s Court. John Mclnley sued J. W. Tighe (principal of tho Institute) for £SO as damages for alleged assault. Mclnley was one of the complainants against the management of the Institute at the recent inquiry. The plaintiff's statement of claim alleged that on August 20th, 1901, defendant assaulted and beat plaintiff', who was an inmate of the Institute. The case is adjourned until Wednesday next.
