THE AWAKENED NORTH.
THE JUST WRATH OF MR FOWLDS.
[By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. Mr Fowlds, M.H.R., telegraphed to the Minister for Public Works as follows : “ Ydur reply to telegram makes confusion worse confounded. No sane man or Minister—which I have always taken you to be—would seriously advise that men should be allowed to walk about in idleness during summer when their work is worth so much more, and be employed knee-deep in mud during the winter, un'ess there was tightness somewhere. Your contention that I overstated the number discharged when I said nearly 300 is only a quibble, when we know the number is over 200. Although you knew my anxiety to know whether the same proportion of men had been dismissed down South, your telegram contained only vague suggestions. Ido not think your explanation is by any means satisfactory. In any case, the almost complete stoppage of work on the Main Trunk line is not an honest way of carrying out the repeated pledges of Government to have the line completed as early as possible.”
