RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING.

SPEECH BY THE PREMIER. EFFORTS TO RETAIN LORD RANFURLY. [By Teegraph—Press Association.] Wellington, last night. The first annual dinner of the New Zealand Mounted Rifle Association was held to-night, the evening being the second anniversary of the departure ot the First Contingent from the colony for South Africa. There was a fine muster of members, and representatives were present from points as far apart as Auckland and Invercargill. The Premier was amongst those in attendance, and in the course of his speech said he thought the colony had ooased sending contingents away too soon : he had thought so over since the last contingent took its departure.

The proceedings were very hearty throughout. During the evening Mr Seddon said that he had written to the Colonial Office asking that Lord Ranfurly’s term of office as Governor might be extended.
